Alvaro Montiel and Dani Santigosa had a topsy-turvy day at the CUPRA Germany P2 in Düsseldorf. Eliminated in the final round of qualifying, the two Spaniards eventually entered the main draw as lucky losers, then earned a place in the round of 16 with a win over Lucas Bergamini and Jairo Bautista.

In its report published on October 7, the International Padel Federation (FIP) said they won 7-5, 7-6 after losing to Clément Geens and Nacho Moragues earlier that morning.

The withdrawal that opened up a place

The defeat to Geens and Moragues seemed to bring Montiel and Santigosa’s tournament to an end. But Mike Yanguas and Coki Nieto withdrew because of an injury to Nieto, freeing up a place in the main draw. Montiel and Santigosa were given a place as lucky losers.

That status allowed them to return to the competition, but did not change the result of their qualifying match: they had indeed been beaten in the final round. To continue in the tournament, they then had to win their first-round match against Bergamini and Bautista.

A two-set win to reach the round of 16

The pair won the close match in two sets, 7-5, 7-6. According to the FIP, the result secured their qualification for the round of 16 at the Germany P2. They went from being eliminated in qualifying to earning a place in the tournament’s main draw, then securing a decisive win that same evening.

The first day of the main draw featured six matches. For Montiel and Santigosa, their tournament now continues with their round-of-16 match in Düsseldorf. The FIP report published on October 7 confirms their qualification, but does not give the result of any match that may have been played afterward.
